Educational Phase 2: Advanced Geriatric Practice. Over 50% of residents of long-term care facilities suffer from bowel and/or bladder incontinence. Incontinence care is expensive, costing the United States healthcare system nearly $30 billion annually. More importantly, older adults who experience incontinence often have serious physical and psychological consequences as a result. Thorough team-based nursing care can identify incontinence and, in many cases, identify and treat reversible causes of incontinence or effectively manage incontinence in order to reduce the risk of complications.
Upon completion of this educational activity, medical providers will be able to more effectively assess and manage incontinence in long-term care residents.
