Educational Phase 2: Advanced Geriatric Practice. Nurses working in long-term care frequently lack the specialized training needed to provide person-centered care for people with autism.
Upon completion of this educational activity, nursing staff should be able to provide person-centered care to long-term care residents with autism and other developmental disorders. This means that administrators will view resident autonomy and choice as essential and will encourage autonomy by individualizing care and encouraging residents and families to be active in their health and life. Administrators will also understand the importance of displaying a caring attitude by focusing on residents’ strengths and maintaining resident dignity.
