Educational Phase 2: Advanced Geriatric Practice. Health providers working in long-term care frequently lack the specialized training needed to provide person-centered care for people with autism.
Upon completion of this educational activity, medical providers should be able to provide person-centered care to long-term care residents with autism and other developmental disorders. This means that medical providers will view resident autonomy and choice as essential and will encourage autonomy by individualizing care and encouraging residents and families to be active in their health and life. Medical Providers will also understand the importance of displaying a caring attitude by focusing on residents’ strengths and maintaining resident dignity.
