Educational Phase 2: Advanced Geriatric Practice. Pain is undermanaged in older adults. Among U.S. adults 65 years of age and older, 52.9% (18.7 million) report experiencing pain that was bothersome in the last month. Of those, 74.8% report having it in more than one site. Nurses caring for individuals in this population sometimes lack the knowledge to appropriately assess pain in geriatric patients with and without cognitive impairment. They also lack the knowledge needed to appropriately manage and advocate for their patients. Upon completing this activity, lay providers will understand how they can best support health providers in their jobs.
